Master of Public Health, Concentration in Biostatistics
The Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health offers a Master of Public Health with emphasis in Biostatistics degree. The Master of Public Health (MPH) degree prepares students in the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health through organized community outreach. Public Health differs from other health programs in that it focuses on large population groups instead of individuals. It emphasizes promoting health and wellness as ultimate goals and prevention over cure.
Biostatisticians use mathematical and scientific tools to analyze data such as the number of deaths from gun violence and trends in drunken driving injuries. They forecast scenarios, make projections, and determine the cause of disease and injury.
There exists a plethora of new analytical and statistical techniques available in biostatistics. Many individuals getting academic degrees in biostatistics outside of public health have little opportunity to enhance their education with courses from other disciplines in public health. Consequently, the need for individuals to be the link between public health researchers and statistical programmers and biostatisticians is increasing. The objective of the MPH degree with a biostatistics concentration in the COPH is to train individuals to be the bridge between scientist, researcher, statistician, and programmer.
The Department of Biostatistics includes faculty members actively involved in design and analysis of research studies in many different biological and human health-related disciplines. Students seeking to specialize in Biostatistics are offered the opportunity to collaborate extensively on research projects funded in various state and federal agencies, and in the private sector, thus preparing them for careers in academics, government and private industry.
Completion of all course requirements, including the two final projects (preceptorship and culminating experience), ensures that graduates have attained the MPH core competencies and the MPH with a concentration in Biostatistics competencies:

Biology Competency Requirement: Students are required to pass all three exams or successfully complete the courses prior to or within the first semester of coursework. Courses do not count toward the minimum 42 credit hours for the MPH degree.
